Selling off the pharmaceutical
part of the business in 1864, he
began another expansion which led
to Menier Chocolate Company
becoming the largest manufacturer
in France. Cocoa growing estates
in Nicaragua and sugar beet fields
and a sugar refinery at in France
were the next purchases made.
New buildings were added in 1860
after he constructed a factory in
London and a distribution center
in New York City. In 1872 he
initiated another expansion that
created the most modern production
facilities in the world. As a
result of expansions by the 1880s
chocolate production had jumped to
125,000 tons annually with 2000
employees. Because of the
shortage of people to meet the
rapidly growing needs of the
company, Menier built 312 homes
and later built a school for the
children and a senior citizens
home for the retired workers.
